Supporting a 100% Women Powered Solar Bakery Community in Kenya

Posted Sunday 11 January 2026 by Urs Riggenbach.

Khweime is a 100% women's group based in Kenya. They are part of the project created with the support of Jansen PrimeSteps Foundation. The 29 members are active women, neighbors and entrepreneurs. Thanks to World Vision Kenya we have been introduced to the ladies. All by themselves, they have financed their kitchen, identified their market, installed their solar oven and started.

In a few days, Joan's training will end with the ritual party, where they are going to show and sell the delicious bread, cookies and cakes recipes Joan taught them.

Here is what they say about their solar baking trainer:

"Thank you for introducing madam Joan to us. She's such a polite lady, kind loving and above all, a very STRONG lady. She actually proved that what a man can do, a woman can do better!! We worked under very hot sunshine, but she never tired. Instead, she asked us to bring cold water to cool the metals. They were too hot to touch, but the work went on as planned."

A few pictures of the women installing their solar oven and calibrating it by themselves (in comment). And here below a 20 seconds video so you can get an insight of the good energy after the first solar bake!

Thank you Joan Ogwang for the inspiring training and all the good work.
